For Such A Time As This

Then Mordecai told them to reply to Esther, “Do not think to yourself that in the king’s palace you will escape any more than all the other Jews.  For if you keep silent at this time, relief and deliverance will rise for the Jews from another place, but you and your father’s house will perish. And who knows whether you have not come to the kingdom for such a time as this?”  Esther 4:13-14 ESV

This set of verses has been on my mind at various times for the last month. With all the chaos that we live in, with the violence, anger, prejudice, judgementalism based on partial information, untruth…you name it,  if it sounds bad it is out there.

And, here we are in the midst of it all. Have you ever wondered why? Why couldn’t I have lived in a more peaceful time? Why was I chosen to live in this atmosphere that at times makes retreating to the fiction I write a welcome escape?

Sometimes I tell myself that if I can’t do something the Lord will use someone else to take care of it, it will be fine. However, that’s not all that these verses say.  Could there be loss for me, and for those connected to me, if I am not willing to take a step to better things? Could it be that perhaps there is that one thing I was created for, and if I walk away from it, I will miss out on the joy of pleasing the Father?

I can’t see anything in my life that would require a step as serious as what Esther was asked to take. But then, if I don’t speak to that teen who is obviously distraught, if I don’t offer what I can, a listening ear, a touch of hope, then perhaps something very serious in that young person’s future will overcome them.

If I don’t answer those seemingly basic questions about God, salvation, and Grace, then perhaps a choice is made that doesn’t lead to salvation, but to an eternal life separated from God.

If I don’t send that money to missionaries, and that’s the same time everyone else chooses not to send…

If sharing the excess of meatloaf and potatoes does more than help keep my refrigerator from being overfilled, but actually is the only hot meal that person has had for…

Little things. Big things. Each and every one matters. We can’t do it all. But we can do, perhaps just that one thing, that God has put right in front of us. For such a time as this.
